Jessie Black is no stranger to the beautiful textiles and splendid designs found across the globe in cities like Paris and Monte Carlo. Her worldly insight radiates throughout every square inch of her alluring self-named San Francisco boutique, Jessie Black. We love her style and unique perspective on design.
What inspired you to launch Jessie Black?
I wanted to create a space where I could share the works of my favorite designers and artisans. Before opening the boutique my career led me to live in some of the world's most vibrant and design-conscious cities, including New York, Paris, Monte Carlo, and London. I'd discovered so much beauty in these cities and I wanted a space where I could showcase these discoveries. By this time I'd also created my own line of linen and cashmere and home-goods. I wanted to showcase my goods in an environment that I created myself. I didn't want to wholesale these pieces to other vendors as I wanted control over how these pieces were merchandised and marketed.
What is the best part of owning your own business?
It's an absolute privilege to wake up everyday and do something you love and I feel so lucky that I am able to do that. There is a wonderful sense of pride that comes from creating something yourself from the ground-up and watching it grow, blossom and succeed.
What is the most memorable moment that has happened in your store?
Opening the doors on that very first day. Nothing will ever compare to that feeling!
What is one piece of advice you have for a budding shop owner?
Go for it! I spent a very long time creating a thorough business plan throughout my MBA. I also spent considerable time conducting market research and drafting strategic and financial plans. Of course this is all a vital part of launching a business but nothing can replace the valuable learnings that you can gain from the simple act of just getting started. I'm not saying leap into it blind but each day make sure you are taking proactive steps towards your goal. They can be shuffles, just keep moving in the right direction. Also don't be stubborn about your plans. The retail climate is always evolving, especially now. You must stay true to yourself but always be open to adapting, evolving and changing.
If there is one thing you would want people to know about your brand, what would it be?
We've recently launched a full-service interior design arm. At the boutique we say specialize in making the world a softer, more beautiful place. Our Interior Design Atelier is an extension of that philosophy.
